Known for her flawless coloratura and captivating stage presence, Danae Kontora has impressed in opera throughout the world in classical and contemporary repertoire. Recent highlights include performances at the Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, and at Opéra National de Paris under Kent Nagano in a staging of Claus Guth, as Lucia (Il Viaggio, Dante). She has performed Die Königin der Nacht (Die Zauberflöte) at Semperoper Dresden, Teatro Regio Torino, Oper Leipzig, Oper Frankfurt, Aalto Musiktheater Essen, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf and in Barrie Kosky’s production for Komische Oper Berlin, including tours to Beijing, Macao, and Taiwan.

She debuted with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Sir Simon Rattle as Waldvogel (Siegfried) at Isarphilharmonie München, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and Philharmonie Luxembourg. This was released on the BR Klassik label and Gramophone concluded that “each arrival of Danae Kontora’s Woodbird floods the stage with light.”

  • Other recent engagements include her role debuts as Lucia (Il Viaggio, Dante) at Opéra National de Paris under Kent Nagano in a staging of Claus Guth, Pretty Polly (Punch and Judy) at Oper Frankfurt, Cunegonde (Candide) at Athens Concert Hall, Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos) at Finnish National Opera, Frantzi (Die Weiden) at Wiener Staatsoper, Philippe (Die Teufel von Loudun) at Bayerische Staatsoper under Vladimir Jurowski, Adele (Die Fledermaus) at Teatro Carlo Felice Genova under Fabio Luisi, Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at Staatsoper Hamburg, Oscar (Un ballo in maschera) at Israeli Opera and Aminta (Die Schweigsame Frau) at Staatstheater Karlsruhe. Kontora has also been seen as Musetta (La bohème) at Greek National Opera and Olympia at Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.

    On the concert stage, Kontora has performed with the Gewandhausorchester under Andris Nelsons, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester for Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream under Mario Venzago, the Orchestra of Oper Frankfurt and Sebastian Weigle for Mendelssohn’s Elias, the Bamberger Symphoniker under Juraj Valčuha at Würzburg’s Mozartfest for Mozart’s Requiem, and the Munich Biennale Festival of Contemporary Music in Claude Vivier’s Kopernikus. She made her Edinburgh International Festival debut as Waldvogel (Siegfried) and returned as Woglinde (Götterdämmerung) with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis. She also performed at the BBC Proms with Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under Constantinos Carydis in a program of Mozart and Strauss, with Tapiola Sinfonietta in Finland for Brett Dean’s And once I played Ophelia, and at Gluck Festspiele with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin for Mozart’s Popoli di Tessaglia.

    Kontora studied at Munich’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater and Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding and was awarded the Bayerische Kunstförderpreis in 2015, the same year of her nomination for “Best Young Singer” by Opernwelt.
