Eco-Opera: Opera for a Sustainable Future

Under the vision of Chinese baritone and stage director Zhengzhong Zhou, Eco-Opera is a company reshaping the art form with ecological awareness, cross-cultural music, and performances that resonate far beyond the stage.

Opera for a Sustainable Future

Eco-Opera was born from a simple inspiration — the word “eco,” which stands for economy, ecology, and ecosystem. Our mission is to create opera that is artistically rich, environmentally conscious, and accessible to all.

Traditional opera is weighed down by expensive sets, large orchestras, and rigid theatre spaces — often prioritising spectacle over storytelling. Eco-Opera rethinks opera from the ground up:

Smaller orchestras: Chamber ensembles featuring both classical and traditional instruments bring new textures and clarity to the music.
Flexible stages: Performances happen among the audience, breaking down barriers and bringing opera back to its communal roots.
Local and sustainable: We use familiar spaces, minimise wasteful productions, and make each performance feel connected to its audience.

This approach reduces costs, makes touring easier, and challenges artists to achieve higher technical and creative standards. Most importantly, it brings opera closer to the people — creating fresh, intimate, and meaningful experiences that revive opera’s original spirit.

Eco-Opera is more than a performance format. It is a platform for young artists, a laboratory for musical innovation, and a step toward a healthier, more sustainable future for opera.
