BRITISH CONDUCTOR GARY MATTHEWMAN TO CONDUCT CAPE TOWN PHILHARMONIC IN EASTER CELEBRATION

Cape Town audiences are in for a treat as conductor Gary Matthewman takes to the podium to lead the Cape Town Opera’s Easter celebration performance with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert will take place on 19 April 2025 and features Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Kyrie in D minor, K. 341 and Laudate Dominum, K. 339, Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11, and Franck’s Panis Angelicus, Op. 12, offering a rich tapestry of sacred music to mark the Easter celebration.

Matthewman’s 2024-25 season has already seen him conduct Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin for Brunswick Vocal Arts, Verdi’s Don Carlo for Opéra de Baugé, and Debussy’s La Mer and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G (featuring Roelof Temmingh) with the St Cecilia Orchestra. Next season Matthewman will make his US conducting debut, as well as conducting performances of Rossini’s L’Elisir d’amore and Handel’s Messiah for Brunswick Vocal Arts.

Celebrated for his “edge-of-seat accuracy and panache,” Matthewman is renowned for his singer-focused conducting style, which has been making waves in the opera world. His return to Cape Town Opera is highly anticipated, as he leads a stellar lineup of soloists alongside the Cape Town Opera Chorus, Children's Chorus, and the Symphony Choir of Cape Town.

This season Matthewman has performed recitals with Golda Schultz in Barcelona and Andorra and still to come he plays the onstage pianist role at the Aldeburgh Festival  in the world premiere of Colin Matthews’ debut opera, A Visit to Friends.
