CELEBRATED MEZZO JUSTINA GRINGYTĖ MARKS BIZET’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY WITH DEBUT SOLO ALBUM
Leading Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Justina Gringytė, hailed for her “astonishing vocal verve” by Bachtrack, has released her first solo recital recording. The album, featuring Georges Bizet’s complete 20 Mélodies, Op. 21, performed with renowned pianist Malcolm Martineau, is available now on Ondine.
Already celebrated for her iconic portrayals of Carmen—described as “magnetic” by The Spectator and “hotly phrased, superbly controlled” by The Guardian—Gringytė’s acclaimed performances at English National Opera were broadcast to cinemas, earning her international recognition. She now shines a light on a lesser-known side of Bizet’s oeuvre, which she calls “a magnificent treasure trove,” coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death in 2025.
“In 2025 we mark 150 years since the death of Georges Bizet, aged only 36 years old,” Gringytė said. “So to delve into his wonderful collection of songs, which have been all-too-seldom performed and recorded, is a timely privilege. They’re truly special, one of the great song collections in my opinion. To have Malcolm Martineau join me on this project, who is such a great pianist and so well-versed in the French song repertoire, is a true musical privilege and profound joy! I am also very proud that this album has been released by the Ondine label.”
Critical Acclaim
Pro Ópera Magazine: “Gringytė’s voice is creamy and dark, lyrical and perfectly adapted to the style… Her middle and low register shine, creating tension and sorrow with a voice that captivates… She sings with refinement, her voice hypnotising and transporting the listener to a distant, mysterious world… She sings with passion and expressivity, mastering the colours and nuances of every phrase.”
Gramophone Magazine: “This is a big, exciting voice, with a fiery gleam at the top and a darkly beautiful chest register, capable of encompassing fierce emotional and dramatic extremes.”
